Launch of the New Lancashire Combined County Authority Marks Significant Step in Devolution
Lancashire has taken a major step forward in the devolution process with the official launch of the new Lancashire Combined County Authority (CCA). This new body, formed through the collaboration of Lancashire County Council, Blackburn with Darwen Council, and Blackpool Council, aims to bring more decision-making powers and investment to the local level.
The creation of the CCA was enabled by a Statutory Instrument that recently passed through Parliament, marking a historic moment for the county. Councillor Phillippa Williamson, leader of Lancashire County Council, described the launch as a "hugely significant achievement for our county".
The CCA will focus on key priorities such as improving public transport, boosting economic prosperity, and enhancing employment and skills. It also aims to address years of historically low investment in the area, providing a platform for accelerated growth and greater local accountability.
Councillor Phil Riley, Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, "This final step is evidence of the ability of the three major Councils to work together for the betterment of the whole of Lancashire"
The first meeting of the new authority is scheduled to be held at County Hall in Preston on March 11, where representatives from the three councils, two district council representatives, and the chairman of Lancashire’s Business Board will convene2.
This launch is just the beginning of a broader devolution process that aims to bring more powers and investment to Lancashire, benefiting both residents and businesses in the region.
